Most times, I eat fish and chips at ikea. Normally, that’s under $10.
Last Thursday, however, I had something different. I spent $12.99 for dinner. That was lot more than before. I had a fishermen’s basket. That included a fish fillet, crab, prawns and octopus. Moreover, there was a chocolate tart as a dessert. That was tasty and filling. For that amount of food, $12.99 was not too much!
I was fully satisfied!

After I and my wife watched the City of Lights, we moved the garden in front of QPAC. There is Brisbane Airport Light Garden. I remember last year Brisbane Festival got a similar setting, but last year was using a lot of Chinese style lanterns. This year, there are full of LED lightings.
Personally, I love this year settings more. The LED lightings will be flashing and changing its colour. I felt like entered the forest in future world! That is cool. I believe most of the kids will love that.
On 7th September, the Brisbane Festival started. This is one of Brisbane’s major events. I join this event every year. There were a lot of excellent performances during this festival. Out of those performances, I loved the laser performance show the most.
Last Friday, I went to watch the Brisbane Festival laser performance show which called itself the Santos GLNG City of Lights this year. I love the organisers. They worked hard. The performance is not the same each year; they have some improvements every year.
For this year, the setting included a huge waterfall at the stage in the middle of the BrisbaneRiver. The laser will draw some symbols on the waterfall, just like a painting. The laser looks like somebody dancing on the waterfall.
Moreover, there was a three people real dance on the bending pole at the main stage just in the waterfall. This feature is the new thing this year, not just laser and water. This year, we got some real “live” performances. Besides of the performance at the main stage, the buildings in CBD have flashing lights and laser which are flashing to Southbank. They are excellent too! When I saw the performance, these features made Southbank feel like a dance party.
For the best spot to watch this performance, I recommend the Culture Forecourt in Southbank. That’s the closest to the main stage and there are a number of speakers. During the performance, the speakers will play some live music. It was very enjoyable in there, which is a perfect mixture of laser, music and dancing performance.
I highly recommend you to watch this performance, from now to 27th September. From Sunday to Thursday, 7pm and 8.30pm there will be Santos GLNG City of Lights. For Friday and Saturday, there will be three sessions at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. Please don’t miss this performance!
I remember when I was in Hong Kong, we went to yum cha every morning. This was our breakfast style, eating a ton of little dishes called dim sims every day. At that time, I really did not like that much, because that was the same every day and it was very very noisy.
After I moved to Brisbane, I changed my mind. I love yum cha. Firstly, the restaurants in Brisbane are much more comfortable. Secondly, I do not go to yum cha every day, so I will not get bored. Thirdly, yum cha is a good way to gather with friends. We can sit around a big table and have some causal chat. Thus, we always have friends’ gathering over yum cha. Just like last week, I went to Yum Cha with my friend at Haoke, which is one of my favourite restaurants.
We had a good time and tried a lot of tasty dishes in there. We have pork dim sims The meat was great quality. It is authentic. That sounds like the chief is really from Hong Kong!
Also, we had my favourite dish, Cantonese Egg tarts which is a kind of egg custard tart pastry. That was very great. The pastry is very nice and the egg custard looks very golden and attractive! I had two of them, I wanted to have more, but I was full.
That was a great lunch. I love Haoke! I wish I can go there soon again.
Note: If you don’t know what is yum cha, please click here to find the reference in Wikipedia.
A few weeks ago, my friend and I went to have Korean BBQ again. This is because one of my friends loves Korean BBQ a lot. Moreover, that friend has highly recommended Sunny Seoul in Sunnybank; she said that was the best Korean BBQ she had in Brisbane ever.
On that night we ordered two dishes, sweet soy sauce chicken and pork belly. That was so delicious. My friend’s recommendations are 100% right! The meat is marinated well. The sauce and the meat are the perfect match. That was so good!!!
In addition, the side dishes are great too!!! There were around six dishes, which included kimchi and various types of salad. I loved the mashed potato salad the most.
That was a super tasty dinner! My tummy got bigger!!! Lastly, I have to remind you to book a table in advance; because we came without making a booking first, we spent half an hour waiting for seats.
QANTAS is not in my list of favourite airlines. I only travelled with them twice and the last time was several years ago. However, recently, I travelled with them. I am quite impressed.
The flight crews were very helpful, but the key factor for my impression is in their flight meals. They were very delicious. I loved them a lot.
First of all, they still offer small bottled wines. As far as I know, most airlines do not offer them anymore so that they can cut costs. Personally, I love this kind of small bottled wines a lot.
Secondly, the meals are tasty. They are not just meat pies and beef. They offer rice, pasta, chicken and fish. These choices are suitable for our Asian tastes. I am impressed with this offer, they were able to do this although this was a flight to Auckland, meaning there were not many Asian people on board.
Thirdly, the portion is just right, not too much or too small. It included a main course and salad. Also, it has a dessert(ice-cream). Sweet!!!
I will consider travelling with them if I need to fly.

In Australia, we have the GST (Goods and Services Tax). Most of the goods we buy in Australia have GST, but if you are a visitor, you can claim the GST back at the airport. In the major international airports, there is a counter for the claiming of GST after you pass immigration, if you bring the goods you bought in Australia. All you need to do is keep the receipts and take the goods to the counter. Then you can get back money.
When I travel to New Zealand, it is a different story. I bought some souvenirs in Auckland. I kept the receipts and brought the souvenirs in my hand carry luggage. It’s done the same way in Australia. When we passed the immigration counter in Auckland, I was looking for the place where I could claim my GST, BUT THERE IS NO SUCH THING IN NEW ZEALAND! All visitors cannot claim their GST in the airport. That is different from Australia! Thus, I suggest if you need to buy souvenirs, you can buy them from the shops which are located in the area after you have passed the immigration counter. They do not charge any GST. I checked the thermal mud products that were the major portion of our souvenirs; they were cheaper if they are without GST. Please be aware of that when you travel to New Zealand.
Apart from sunny beaches, there are many good Japanese restaurants, such as Yamasakura. Ten years ago, that was already my favourite choice, because there are value meal deals and the restaurant was always full.
Recently, my friends and I had meals in there too. That is around $12 for Eel Dinner set. This set includes a small eel with rice, ramen and miso soup. Although the eel rice and ramen are not very big, they are good enough to taste. That is delicious! Moreover, I felt full after having this meal. I think that is super value for money, $12 can fill me up!
